Magic is a very old art form.
Participants in the program assume the role of a magician. Magicians learn how to perform “tricks”, which means they use secret information combined with careful planning and practice to create the illusion that mysterious and magical things are happening. Our course includes magic tricks with cards, with ropes, everyday objects and some special magician props.
Through My Magic Hands, young magicians discover how to create magic. They also learn that knowing is very different from doing. Participants are encouraged to look beyond their existing horizons and to break past perceived boundaries as they prepare for the final presentation. We coach magicians on how to practise and rehearse (yes, there is a difference!) so that they can show their magic proudly to family and friends.
Who's it for?
We focus and target our program to at risk youth between the ages of eight to fourteen. We offer two levels of programming:
Junior Program
(Ages Eight to Twelve)
Participants are introduced to magic as a performance art through the instruction of several basic magic tricks. Rather than watching as spectators, children become magicians as they learn how to execute, then perform each trick.
They learn that new information and knowledge can lead to wonderful things. They also learn the relationship between preparation (planning, practice and rehearsal) and achievement (a successful trick, applause from an audience.)
Senior Program
(Ages Thirteen to Sixteen, or Junior graduates)
Particiapnts are either graduates of the junior program or olderready for the challenge of a more advanced program. We use the same program scheduling aimig to present The Big Show at the end of the eight weeks.
Box of Secrets
Participants are provided with magic kits, affectionately known as Box of Secrets, and a Book of Secrets to store all of the materials and information necessary for the program. Each week they are filled with new magic tricks and instructions. Magic kits are provided free of charge thanks to Magicana’s donors and sponsors. In addition to the tricks themselves, magicians also learn the necessary skills to present the magic - whether it’s for a few friends or an audience of fifty people.
How It Works
The course consists of eight sessions, one ninety-minute session per week for eight consecutive weeks. Instruction is provided by a professional magician and volunteer “magic coaches”. The program maintains a high volunteer-student ratio which guarantees a quality learning experience. But wonderful by-products of the focused volunteer coaching are the important and meaningful bonds of relationships and mentorship.
The Big Finish
At the end of the program all of the participants present A Big Magic Show where they show off all that they have learned in the program. Participants invite family, friends and members of the local community. Pictures taken at the big show are stored in the private password-protected photo gallery. |
