Hanging out with Camp Ooch

After several years of partnership, we had yet another successful day-out with Camp Oochigeas, (lovingly nicknamed Camp Ooch) this past Saturday, November 3.

Together with over 27 kids, 11 volunteers and 5 of our own Magicana staff, we filled Ooch’s space with wonder and magic for a whole Saturday afternoon.

Camp Oochigeas is a privately funded, volunteer-based organization that provides kids with cancer and kids affected by childhood cancer a unique opportunity for growth through challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for coming in to Ooch on Saturday.  I’ve heard rave reviews from campers, volunteers and camper families.  They had such a great day, and learned so many neat tricks!”

-Olivia Tischler, Program Manager In-City

The camp has become an important resource for kids and their families and has grown beyond the summer days of camp. For their fall program, Ooch  introduced: Wacky World of Wizardry to encourage youth to participate in honing their motor skills, communication skills and creative problem-solving skills by learning a variety of magic tricks using classic magical props: ropes, cards and ball vases!

We know these kids face immense challenges, and so we are so inspired to see how hard they work despite these issues. We know that our campers would not have had as much fun nor success as they did if it wasn’t for their dedicated camp volunteers, “Magic Coaches”, who provided personal and supportive encouragement each step of the way.

We ended the day with a Big Show, where the campers had a chance STAR in their own show, in front of their families and friends, and show off the tricks they learned that day.

Special thanks to the volunteers who helped us with the workshop, as well as Julie Eng, James Alan, Joe Culpepper, Suleyman Fattah and Ellise Ramos for donating their Saturday afternoons to make My Magic Hands happen.

We look forward to the next year and may magic and wonder continue to be shared all around…

Big Brothers, Big Sisters AND BIG MAGIC!

Magicana held a magic day camp for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Torontothis past Weekend, Saturday, August 18.

We salut the BBBST’s philosophy of mentoring and its life-changing effects to empower and motivate youth to reach their full potential.  The mandate of My Magic Hands has always been to use magic as a metaphor in problem-solving and creative thinking while, building self-confidence and self-esteem.

As a result, we find that our volunteers, or “magic coaches”, really are the secret ingredient in success for  participants as they learn magic feats throughout the day. The one-on-one attention, focus and encouragement is educational but most of all the bonding that is built between Bigs and Littles is what this day was all about.

Congratulations to all our participants and to their Bigs for sharing wonder with their Littles!

A Thank You to our Amazing Volunteers

We are proud to congratulate, yet again, another set of My Magic Hands graduates from Holland Bloorview.

Our first session started on May 15 and ended with a blast on May 31 with their “Big Show”. Once more these young magicians entertained staff, friends, parents and other members of the community in Holland Bloorview as they showed off their new tricks, all the while displaying talent and confidence.

We’d like to take the time to say a heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers. We are very lucky to work with such amazing volunteers, who really took the time to focus on our participants at a one-to-one basis, and who were so dedicated in honing in their goals and achievements. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish half as much as we did if our volunteers weren’t as dedicated and patient, and for that, we thank you.

If you’re looking to make a difference in your community this summer, Holland Bloorview is a great place to volunteer. For more information you can visit their website or contact them at 416 422 7031 or e-mail at volunteers@hollandbloorview.ca.
